When it comes to epoxy flooring, a common question we hear is: “Can methylated spirits be used to thin epoxy?”

The clear answer is no. Using metho in epoxy systems often leads to coating defects

The short answer is no - and here’s why using methylated spirits (metho) can cause more problems than it solves.

Why Metho Doesn’t Work as an Epoxy Thinner

Epoxy systems are carefully balanced. Each kit contains a precise mix ratio of resin and hardener to ensure proper curing and performance.

When metho is added, it reacts with the hardener and speeds up the cure, giving you far less time to work. On top of that, it throws off the resin-to-hardener balance, which often leads to soft spots, bubbling, or uneven patches. And because metho evaporates so quickly, it makes the epoxy feel like it’s setting before you’re ready, leaving little room for control or consistency.

What might seem like a shortcut often leads to a poor finish and unnecessary rework.

Hidden Problems with Metho in Epoxy

Beyond the obvious curing issues, metho brings along a few hidden risks. Many brands contain trace amounts of water or other contaminants. This can compromise moisture resistance, leading to problems such as blushing or poor inter-coat adhesion.

Metho’s chemistry also doesn’t match well with epoxy. Instead of forming a strong, even film, it can leave soft or under-cured patches behind. And in warm or enclosed environments, the fast evaporation rate increases the risk of solvent entrapment - bubbles and coating defects that can spell coating failure down the line.

Different Names to Watch Out For

Metho may also be sold as:

  • Methylated Spirits
  • Ethanol
  • Denatured Alcohol
  • Methanol

Regardless of the label, it’s not the right choice for epoxy.

The Right Way to Thin Epoxy

If you need to thin epoxy, the correct approach is to use APC Thinners. Our xylene-based thinner is formulated specifically for APC epoxy systems. Unlike metho, it doesn’t interfere with the cure or finish - it works with the epoxy, not against it.

APC Thinners give you:

  • More pot life and better working time
  • Smoother flow and levelling
  • A consistent cure with no residue
  • A strong, professional finish you can trust

That way, your epoxy flooring performs exactly as intended - smooth, seamless, and ready for the job.

In summary: Metho might look like a shortcut, but it creates more problems than it solves. The right thinner makes all the difference. With APC Thinners, you can apply epoxy with confidence and achieve the finish your project deserves.
