The Challenge
Rising damp and moisture vapour transmission in a concrete slab
Site assessment identified elevated moisture levels and rising damp within the concrete slab, a common condition in older slabs without a vapour barrier beneath the original pour.
Moisture vapour transmission through a concrete slab is not always visible at the surface. A slab can appear dry and sound while still carrying moisture from below. Coating over this condition without treatment typically results in blistering, delamination, or premature system failure, as trapped vapour pushes against the coating from underneath.
Addressing this required a moisture-tolerant epoxy system specified for the substrate condition, not a standard coating applied without regard for what was happening beneath it.

The Solution
A moisture-tolerant epoxy system for commercial flooring
A moisture-tolerant epoxy system was specified to withstand vapour transmission and provide a stable base for everything applied above it. The slab was mechanically prepared, grinding back the surface profile to open up the concrete and give the coating system proper mechanical adhesion, a critical step on a slab with known moisture issues.
A base coat of EPO100T® Pipeline Grey N43 was specified for this prepared surface, followed by a top coat of EPO100G® Glaze, tinted with Pipeline Grey N43 for visual depth. Together they deliver a hard-wearing, low-maintenance finish suited to commercial environments and regular foot and equipment traffic.
At the main entrance, where slip risk is highest, Quartz Shield® Silver 40 was specified, adding textured grip underfoot without compromising the finish carried throughout the space.
